Most processes running on my PC eat too much memory.
(I've got 1GB of physical memory)

explorer.exe -> open task manager, go into "My computer" and
click F5 (refresh) several times. each refresh increases memory
consumption several megabytes higher.. it never gets lower again.

All other processes do the same, when I use excel (for VBA programming)
+ visual studio, asp.net and all that stuff around for several hours and
then look into the task manager,

explorer.exe uses about 200MB, visual studio 300-500MB, excel .. 200MB

My machine is clean. No spyware, viruses and stuff. No executables that
could cause this are running...

thanks

You say explorer is using 200MB of RAM? And you don't think you have any
sort of Virus/trojan/worm/spyware/adware/malware at all - but you don't
state why.

How many processes do you have running after a clean boot?
Can you post a list of these processes and their memory use after a reboot?

Hi,

To check out what's the problem, I formatted my hard drive (no files
even at other disk partitions) and installed Windows XP, Visual
Studio.NET, Office and all basic stuff that I need for the development.
(All from vendor CDs or my own programs.) WITHOUT having the internet
connection!

I ran antivirus (with the most recent database) + adaware for sure, have
XP SP1 with security updates (maybe not all, I'm not sure but I don't
think this is the reason)

You can be sure there's no process running that would cause that, I know
all the processes personally;) and their purpose, too. I always work
with task manager running in the systray... If something new appears, I
know about it.

thanks for your time.

So that's a "No, I cannot post the processes and RAM they use after a
reboot"?

If it is a clean install and it is still doing it, then there is either
something awry with your "vendor supplied" media or you have defective
hardware. I have worked on 100's of thousands of PCs and I cannot say I
have seen anyone report Explorer taking up 200MB of memory by just opening
at a fresh boot and pressing F5 over and over unless there was some third
party application involved that had corrupted something on that PC.

Lavasoft AdAware is a great product, but I would always suggest you run it,
Spybot Search and Destroy, SpywareBlaster and CWShredder at the same time
after updating each of them.. (if you had no Internet, how did you update -
manual download of the REF list?)

I'm trying to get a better picture - a fresh install seems something you are
willing to do.. So why not fresh install.. Do NOT put everything you need
on it immediately.. See if you have the symptoms.. Install ONE more thing..
See if the symptoms develop.. Install one more thing, see if the symptoms
develop.. so on.. Until they do - if they ever do develop?

Hi

Sorry, I can't send the list of processes now because I'm not gonna get
home this week. I'm out for business. :(

But thanks for pointing me to the right direction, it's a good idea to
make a clean install and test it before/after installation of each other
piece of software to see WHEN it happens.
I'll post the results when I find out something new.

Just FYI:

My notebook with unpatched (!) Win2K (which I'm using right now) has no
such problem. It's still online, with tons of spywares/registry entries
found each time I run adaware... (but no "standard" viruses)
It's heavily used for browsing. Explorer is max. 12MB (real+virtual)..
I just thought this could be an XP specific problem.

it might just be that you need to reformat and reinstall
windows, but first in the start menu go to "run" then
type "msconfig" there you will see may tabs up top go
to "startup" then "disable all" ok and exit it will ask
to restart then at boot up a box will appear saying do
you want it to appear again .DONT CLICK IT see if
everything runs will if so restart again, then the menu
dialog box will appear again click "dont appear again" or
whatever it says and you should be running a little
faster.

BY THE WAY if you dont like the way that runs just go
to "msconfig" again and "enable all"
