I updated my Widows XP with SP2. Now intermitantly I have no Icons or start
menu on either of my login pages. I have my oritginal windows cd but do I
have to completely reinstall. Last time I did that i lost my virus protection
and that dang near strangled my computer. This comes and goes. Ive been using
the control alt del and then the run command. windows L comand still works

I have the same problem, but not intermitantly. I just have no icons or start
menu. I'm hoping someone comes up with an answer.

After your computer boots, and only the wallpaper shows with no icons,
rightclick center of screen, click "Arrange icons by" and then click
"Show desktop icons". Did that work?

See if the desktop comes up when you ctrl-alt-delete -> new task, type in
explorer, then press return.

Explorer should start.

Look in the processes for atypical startup programs, like wowexec.exe for
example, or other items that have not been there until this point.

(Is it even possible to turn off the Active Desktop in XP ?) I've seen
spyware that does this, because the active desktop IS tied to IE.

Mine is jumping back and forth . When it was blank I tried teh right click
but no luck either

Rick - I don't know if this will help either one of us, but take a look at a
post from 2/18/2006. The original question was from Joe Dunn - Missing Icons
in XP Home Edition. I found it by typing "missing icons" in the search
block. Good luck.
