All of my (hundreds or thousands of) Word documents have
converted to "Read Only" (I can only modify them if I
save with a new name).

I'm using Word 2000 with all the Microsoft Updates. This
occured when I moved my data to a new machine. I backed
up the data onto a CD using Veritas RecordNow, and moved
it to a folder on the new machine.

Any ideas????

Hi normally whan you copy files to a cd they are given the read only attribribut
try right clicking on the folder you have created and unclick read only

That worked! On the copied folder of documents, I opened
properties and unchecked "read only" - and applied the
change to all subfolders and files. That solved the
problem. Thank you!

This can be a by-product of using the CD. While the latest version of
Windows doesn't copy the read-only attribute from the CD, others do.

You can, in Windows, select all of the files in a folder and right-click on
one to read the properties. Un-check the read-only attribute.

For future reference, if you use the DOS XCOPY or XXCOPY commands to copy
from the CD you can avoid this happening.
