all messages deleted

Outlook Express 6 suddently reset, deleting all messages in all folders and
contacts. I recovered the contacts but can't find the messages. This
happened to my wife about a year ago and we never recovered the messages.
Any thoughts about why this occurs and if the messages are still there
somewhere?
