Terry

I am trying to help a friend with her Windows XP problem.
Yesterday, she left her computer for about an hour or so
and when she came back, her desktop icons were in the
recycle bin (no restoration possible) and it looks like C:
is gone. Connections, loose wires, crimped wires..have
been checked. Virus?? or ??? Please help if possible,
this loss is devastating to her as she had no backups of
her documents.

No, I don't have XP on my machine. Is there a CD to do
that? or what? and thank you for answering.

Hi, Terry.

A repair installation should cure both problems - the one you're coping with
and the one that caused it.

Boot up and go into Setup - how, will be shown at the bottom of the screen,
usually "Press F1 to enter setup" or similar. You this right away, and you
have to be quick.

Set the BIOS to boot from the CD-ROM. (Self explanatory and quite simple)
Insert the Windows XP CD and boot.

Select 'Repair Installation". She won't lose any data.

Then show her how to back up!!

Good luck.

Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> System Restore,
Pick a date and time before the problem. Might work.

The only problem with this is you have to have a "Windows
XP CD" a restore from the maker will not do it. That is
just a image and would do a clean install and she would
lose all data and settings.

I guess her docs weren't important then.
