I have two computers basically doing the same thing. Launch Windows
Explorer and have the folders pane visible. Navigation works for a while
and then just stops. Explorer is still functional. I can more around
folders just cannot use the left pane (all folders pane) to navigate. Clost
Explorer and reopen and all is fine.

I also have an external USB drive. If I copy from the IDE internal drive to
the USB drive and then try to go back to the c: drive via the all folders
pane I get the same reults buy I can use the up navigation and the right
pane to continue to work.

Has anyone seen this before. It is driving me crazy.

No go. I copy a single file from any of my USB storage devices and I can no
longer use the left pane to navigate. This is a weird one. I would have
thought that there was an issue with the USB if not for thr fact that I have
another machine that has a similar problem without any USB storage devices.

What stumps me is that there have to be others out there having this issue.
I run nothing special. Only commonality of the two machines is that they
are Dell.

Any other suggestions?

Actually, you are a genius. Your registry patch did seem to fix it. Needed
to reboot. Should have known that. I have been looking for a fix for the
better part of a year on my other computer. It fixed on my home computer so
will try on my office computer later today

Thanks!!

Great, glad to hear it Ben and thanks for the feedback and kind words. Keep
us posted on the other system and good luck! :o)

I actually spoke too soon. It seems to fix the problem whereas the
immediate stop of refresh after copying to a USB storage device. I still
have it go "south" intermittently. I will start reading some of the links
you sent me.

Thanks

Mysterious inability to expand left-pane folder structures is known to occur
if you have more than 100 subfolders off a target folder and you are using
a Windows Explorer shortcut to auto-expand a specified target subfolder.

See my Post entitled: "Expand disabled in Explorer and XP" in the
microsoft.public.windowsxp.customize
newsgroup.

Up until recently, the above Windows limitation has not been significant
because few people have more than 100 subfolders off a target folder.

However, with the proliferation of Music devices with large amounts of
memory, more and more people are cataloguing their music albums by
subfolder structures on their music devices -- so seeing more than 100
subfolders is becoming more common.

If you do run into the abovementioned limitation, try making genre-folders
for your music and splitting the folder structure so you have a smaller
number of subfolders in each genre-folder. If this magically solves your
problem, then it pretty well proves you're having the problem mentioned
above.

Hope this helps.

Best I can do for now. <tm>

This is not the case in my situation. As a matter of fact, if I leave
explorer up for a while I get "funky" looking icons in the left pane. If
possible I would post a screen print here.
