If you'll look more closely at the check mark in that Read-Only box, you'll
see that it's gray, not black. You can also verify this by clicking a few
times in the box; it will cycle among *three* states: unchecked, checked in
black, and checked in gray.

A black check means the item is read-only and an unchecked box means it's
not read-only. But the gray check means that it's neither. The read-only
attribute is not pertinent to folders.

So no, your folders aren't read-only, and what you are seeing is perfectly
normal. There's nothing to worry about and nothing to fix.

The read-only attribute for a folder is typically ignored by Windows.

That is normal.

I have the same problem as Nick Rogers. When I right-click on the folder and
uncheck "read-only" it seems to work, but then when I close the folder and
then open it again the box is green again.

This seems to prevent me from copying files from one workgroup computer to
another. How do I get out of this maze?

The answer that Rick Rogers gave the OP applies to you, too:

"Read only" as an attribute is ignored by Windows at the folder level,
it only applies to files. For why, read:

Unable to remove Read-Only attribute from folder
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=256614

So this is not the reason you are unable to share files. The most common
reason for not being able to share files is a misconfigured firewall,
but since I don't know anything about your network or any error
messages, here are some links to help you. The first link is to a small
network troubleshooter by MVP Hans-Georg Michna. It is very much
worthwhile taking the time to go through the troubleshooter as it
usually will pinpoint the problem area(s).
