All desktop icon gone, and can not run any executable file

Dear All,

When I turn on my notebook today, all the desktop icons named xxx.lnk and I
can not run all my program, when I click on the icon, it prompt "Windows can
not open the file". It seems it won't recognize the file type, even I click
on the exe file, it also can not run.. what's happen?? Please help.

It's possible that you may have been infected by a virus. When was the last
time you updated your virus definitions and performed a full system scan?
 
Does the problem exist if you click on Start/All Programs/ProgramName?
Example: Start/All Programs/MS Word

If your EXE file associations are corrupted, it can be difficult to open REGEDIT, or to even import REG files. To work around this, press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.EXE and press Enter.
