Hi All, I am moving shares from one server to another and because a lot of
users would have custom shortcuts I think the best way would be to create an
alias with the old server name to point to the new server. However I keep
getting a message saying "a duplicate name exists on the network". Is there
any way around this as it's driving me nuts. I've tried adding extra IP
addresses to the new server and pointing the alias to them but get the same
message. This occurs on both 2000 and 2003. Thanks, Liam.

You need to add a registry key to lanmanserver. Google for
"DisableStrictNameChecking" and you'll find the answer.
