Other day while working on computer (MSN) an alert
appeared. I opened it. It appeared genuine. As a 60
year old novice I did not pay attention to who it came
from.

It listed many updates and after each one it stated that
after downloading you needed to close and restart in
order for it to take effect.

It has not come up again.

Someone told me that as problems are "caught" by
programmers they alert you to download the information to
correct the problems.

Did this come from Microsoft.

Have Microsoft XP Home Edition. Have MSN8. Do not think
it came from MSN8.

Have Emachine Model T2240.

That someone is correct. Patches come out weekly to
fixes of Software, this is a practice done by all
software vendors. What came up is the AutoUpdate
feature, while you were on line it checked Microsoft for
new updates and was notify of new updates, you then
downloaded. Good Job. If you have a Virus program ie
McaFee or Norton you should check there sites out weekly
for new definitions come out weekly, that you need to
apply.
