Dear Microsoft, I love this product and need to report
that just in past week have been receiving Microsoft
Alerts that are not,I feel, from MS. When I open it to
read it, it will say "I am sorry but your message to
(e-mail address removed) could not be delivered, message below. Then
there is no message. I have sent NO messages to any of
these so-called addresses. Now I am almost afraid to open
anything from MS! Please inform me what this is and how I
may handle it? Thank you for your time. Sincerely,
Elizabeth Chapman (e-mail address removed)

Dear Elizabeth --

You did not receive an update notification from Microsoft! You
received a virus-laden email message from a devious imposter!

A devious imposter is "spoofing" Microsoft and attempting to deceive you
into installing a malicious VIRUS in your computer! Delete the VIRUS
laden message immediately!

Microsoft never sends file attachments with email messages!

Please take a moment to read the following articles:

Elizabeth,

These forums are not Microsoft. They are a Peer-to-Peer support forum
that is hosyed by Microsoft. Ms maintains no official presense here.
Everyone here are Users such as yourself. People volunteer their time to
try and help others with their troubles.

What you are receivng are caused by a virus. This virus will infect a
computer, then send copies of itself out to people listed in the infected
address book. It will also select a name from that address book to forge
the "From:" address to disguise it's origin. Which is why you keep
receving the bouced back e-amil. Someone with your address has been
infected and the virus selected your name from their list.

As a final note. You shouldn't post your real address in pubilc
places. Spammrs and virus writers use special program to harvest e-mail
address from places such as this to gather a bunch of e-mails for their
neferious deeds. Most people recommend using a throw-away e-mail account
such as an extra hotmail or Yahoo account. Or, altering your address so
it is not valid and a live person would need to fix it to e-mail you (
EX...glitternight_1@THISDOESN'TBELONGHEREhotmail.com ).

Kamu:
Microsoft does not send security updates, patches, fixes, etc. via email.
There are several of these phony MS emails being sent around. Delete them.
If the one you received referred to the "September 2003, Cumulative Patch",
you may want to have a look at this link...
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]
Note that SWEN also tries to propagate throught the use of email delivery
failure notices. Delete these also.
