i noticed that the new windows media player will preview an album cover for you, presumably if you turn on the drm stuff (no way am i turning this crap on) it'll download and show you the album cover? does anyone know of a way to make a "folder.jpg" or something like this to show up in that area

Download Tag&Rename and try it for 30 days. It will search AllMusic and
download the images for you, saving them as "Folder.jpg". It's WELL worth the
registration fee if you decide to keep it. If not, you should be able to update
all of your files in the 30-day trial period.
