Again a partitioning question.

I recently bought a near new computer with Win XP on a 80 gig hard
drive. There is only one partition.
I would like to partition this drive in four or five segments without
removing Win XP and the other software allready on it, so that I can
safeguard my downloads.
What is a safe method and what software do you recommend?
Reason I ask is that I tried this once before some years back with
negative results.
Thanks for any help given....Eskay.

Partition Magic or similar product. If you value your data, back it up
first regardless of how well a program performs. The unexpected always
happens that way.

I've used it for years and only had a problem when a version didn't
support a larger drive. Other than that it's always worked as stated.
Just don't do it without a backup...

Unfortunately, no version of Windows provides any way of changing the
existing partition structure of the drive nondestructively. The only way to
do what you want is with third-party software. Partition Magic is the
best-known such program, but there are freeware/shareware alternatives. One
such program is BootIt Next Generation. It's shareware, but comes with a
free 30-day trial, so you should be able to do what you want within that 30
days. I haven't used it myself, but it comes highly recommended by several
other MVPs here.

Whatever software you use, make sure you have a good backup before
beginning. Although there's no reason to expect a problem, things *can* go
wrong.

You could very likely end up with dire results with a pre installed
XP OS. The prices of hard drives today make partitioning into
segments a thing of the past.

Just did two different drives with the BootitNG 30-day trial version Ken B.
mentioned.
Works fantastic from a floppy. Booted from floppy, Cancelled the "Install",
used the Maintenance feature and chose partition work. Plenty of
documentation available.
Backup, backup, backup!

So someone with a near new computer with Win XP on a 80 GB hard drive
should install a new hard drive instead of partitioning?

That is a bull shit reply!

If by downloads you mean programs and possibly licences bought and paid for
then sooner or later a hard drive crash leaves you with nothing worth
recovering. Buy a External USB2 hard drive EHD and create your partitions
on that.
