After update to XP Pro - cannot stop it trying to update to Win DVD6

Since upgrading from ME to XP Pro I now find that EVERY
time I switch my computer on, it displays a window telling
me that there is a DVD decoder Upgrade (for which one has
to pay!). How can I stop this window appearing as I have
a MUCH better decoder (NOT MS) already on board?

I suggest you try this -

START > RUN > msconfig <Press Enter or click OK>

System Configuration Utility appears -

If it is not set to Normal Startup... set it to Normal Startup... and then click Apply at the bottom -

Then click on the Startup tab at the top -

Look for an item called dvdupgrd in the list -

If you find dvdupgrd, make note of it's Location-

Most likely it will be: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If System Configuration Utility was already in Normal Startup... when you first opened it.

then just click Cancel at the bottom - If you had to put it into Normal Startup... - then

click Close at the bottom and then click on "Exit Without Restart"

START > RUN > regedit <Press Enter or click OK>

Registry Editor appears -

(I include the standard cautionary warning)

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (Click on the Run folder - actually called a Key) -

In the right hand side (called the Value pane) -

Find dvdupgrd under the Name column -

Right click on dvdupgrd and click on Delete and then confirm that you want to delete it -

Close Registry Editor

Restart the computer

See if the prompt to upgrade the DVD Decoder has gone away -
