After update not directly to desktop

Hi all,

I just executed an automatic update, and the behaviour of my computer is
changed. Before, if I started my computer it would start until my desktop was
displayed. Now it waits at a screen where the user needs to choose what
account to open. As I am the only one who uses this computer, I have no
password, this feature is superfluous.

What do I need to do to pass the account choice screen and open the desktop?

One of the updates that was installed may have installed .Net framework
which would have created an ASP.NET account with this effect of changing
automatic logon. To restore it manually go to windows update and search for
updates. There may be an update to the updates you installed which will
have the added effect of restoring the auto logon. If that doesn't do it
run these steps: [Note: good security practices include setting a strong
password on all accounts and requiring that password to be entered to
login].

1. Go to Start | Run and type in: control userpasswords2 | Ok.

2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To
Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name
and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you start
your computer.

You can accomplish the same thing by:

Download and install tweakui for xp and use its auto logon feature.

Lastly you can add the Dialog box that comes up when running control
userpasswords 2 to the Control Panel with the following tweak:

Add Control User Passwords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

An large answer which probably help me. I must say I reverted back to a
previous restore point because the update had an adverse effect on the
performance of my system. But next time update is started I surely will
remove the .Net framework.

Great, glad it's sorted and that I could help. I'm not sure about your
comment on removing .Net framework. It is not needed natively in XP, but
some programs require it (sometimes a specific version), and there will be
more programs that will. It does not necessarily cause problems, but can
sometimes mess with the auto logon, which is easily corrected. Good luck.
