After I do a Restart, computer restarts Windows, but then leaves the "Common"
screen that I have to close because I do not need it there. Just recently
noticed this problem and wonder if has occurred since I changed ISP????

Hi Gramma,

What do you mean by the term "Common screen". Is the Common Files folder
launched automatically when logging on?

That's probably right. I do a Restart, WIN XP runs, then Welcome screen, then
immediately on top of my Desktop is the screen "Common" at the top and down
the left side "File and Folder Tasks"; "Other Places"; and "Details" which I
have to close to see my Desktop. I wasn't logging on to anything--it just
automatically came up! Hey, thanks for a quick response. Gramma

Thanks for the quick response. You are probably right; that must be the
Common Files folder. I do Restart, Win XP runs, Welcome screen comes on, then
on top of my Desktop screen is this screen with "Common" in the top left and
has "File and Folder Tasks; Other Places; Details" that I have to close in
order to see my Desktop screen. Yes, it automatically comes up but I am not
logging on to anything.

This is caused if one of the startup entries are not formatted correctly in
the registry.

Download Startup Tracker application from this page:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_starttrack.htm

Launch the program, and click the "View log" button. Post the contents of
the log file here.

Downloaded Tracker app but did not see anything referring to "View Log".

There are some entries in the listing that are not enclosed within
double-quotes. You need to open Regedit.exe and navigate to the
corresponding registry keys and fix the Value data for the entries starting
with the string C:\Program Files\Common....

Use the following articles as examples:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/stfolder.htm
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/dellfolder.htm

Backup your registry first.

Yes, yes, that little double-quote thing in Regedit did it for me! I also
read another post by Melissa who was also very frustrated, and Don Knox's
inputs to the same problem. I also send my thanks to you guys who save the
"lesser-knowledgeable" a lot of expense for services of a computer repair
service.
(I'll probably be back though; I'm going on 80, you know!)
