What a nightmare.
Got a worm, followed Symantec instructions: stopped system restore, booted
in safe mode and got rid of the worm. Re-booted in normal mode: disaster!
Everything is there but it looks like my "settings" have changed. The pc
doesn't load the start up programs - no profile on email - no way of
retrieving the original configuration. I re-booted both in normal and
selective mode with no success. Out of desperation I wanted to do a system
restore (which I re-activated) to find out that I have only ONE restore point
created a couple of minutes before when I logged on after the safe mode. This
issue affects only my identity, other identities are perfectly fine.
Sorry for the long message. Is there anyone who can provide some help.

Thanks!

Hi,

This is exactly why System Restore should NOT be disabled before virus
and malware infection is removed.
Norton has been preaching the BS for quite some time, and it is wrong.
Now you have no way to reverse your actions. Infections that MAY have
been in a restore point are dormant, until the system is restored. The
time to purge restore points in AFTER all cleaning has been performed.
NOT before.

I suspect this is your only alternative.
How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install by Michael Stevens MS-MVP:

Thank you Bert for the quick reply. I must admit that after looking at the
procedure for a Windows XP repair I am getting a bit nervous....
What I am about to say is perhaps a bit naive and amaturish so please don't
flame me. What if I create a new admin identity and config it so to mirror my
old one and then delete the "corrupted" one. Do you think this will work?
