I was in an xcel work sheet and, while thinking kept my finger on the space
bar for > than eight seconds.
A pop-up showed stating I had invoked a "filter". Now I cannot get rid of
the "filter.
For example, when I click on any box other than, say, A1 the entire group of
boxes is highlighted.
Even when I get out of the worksheet and start a brand new worksheet the
same thing occurs.
How do I get rid of this "filter.
Attempts to work with Microsoft's suggestions have failed as I can never see
a highlighted "clear" for the data boxes.

It sounds like you toggled a windows accessibility option.

Go to windows control panel|Accessibility options|Keyboard tab
Uncheck the Filterkeys.

As an aside, you may like to turn on the ToggleKeys option.

You'll hear a beep if you hit the caps lock, num lock or scroll lock. It can be
enough to stop typos.

In Vista you find it here

Control Panel\Ease of Access\Ease of Access Center
Make the keyboard easier to use
