hello.

i've noticed that it takes a while, on my machine at least, to switch
between aero and basic through control panel. (not that i do it a lot).
however if i start up paint shop pro 10, vista switches instantly to basic
and notifies me. although, the sidebar stays transparent, all other features
are disabled... close psp 10 and it switches back to aero straight away. is
this normal to take so long and to not take so long? if you know what i
mean...

my real question - maximised:

when i maximise a window the title bar changes to dark black/blue/grey. as
does the sidebar. is there a way to keep its transparency appearance (as it
is when a window is resizable)? maybe a few registry hacks?

any ideas?

No... you can however resize the window manually to be in resize mode
yet take up all the screen, once you do that you can press the SHIFT key
while you press the close button, from that time on, the window will retain
that position and size....

tell me if this helps

Ok, I'll bite... what would be the purpose? The only reason the title
bar is semi-tranparant when a window is less than full screen in size
is to see other items that may be underneath it. If you maximize a
window I'm going to go way out on a a limb and conclude you don't want
to see anything but the window you just maximized, or why else did you
maximize it?

That is microsoft logic...
kinda dumb you know..

take a brake from vista.. you will regenerate your brain cells
