What's the most effective adware and spyware removal tool? Apparently these
freeware ones are junk.

Au contraire!! Spyware and adware has become so prolific and widespread that
no one program is effective against everything, so current wisdom is to use
two (or three) for maximum protection. To that end, I use Ad-aware
(lavasoft.com) and Spybot S&D. Both seem to work very well and do not
confict. I also have Spyblaster running in the background. Spyblaster
keeps spyware from getting onto your system in the first place. All require
updating definitions regularly, and all are FREE!

Who told you that?.. and would you rather believe whoever told you or
somebody in here?..

Ad-aware is *free* and is the most widely used and best out there. Some
spyware is very difficult to get rid of requiring you to run the scan in
safe-mode and use multiple tools to clean your system.
After you run ad-aware try running a program called 'hijack this' (do a
search) to stop the buggers from starting up when you open IE.
*Warning* - hijack this just gives you a list and it's up to you to decide
what to delete so be careful.

To deal with issues caused by any sort of "adware" and/or
"spyware,"such as Gator, Comet Cursors, Smiley Central, Xupiter,
Bonzai Buddy, or KaZaA, and their remnants, that you've deliberately
(but without understanding the consequences) installed, two products
that are quite effective (at finding and removing this type of
scumware) are Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search &
Destroy from www.safer-networking.org/. Both have free versions.
It's even possible to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to "immunize" your
system against most future intrusions. I use both and generally
perform manual scans every week or so to clean out cookies, etc.

Additionally, manual removal instructions for the most common
varieties of scumware are available here:

Then why does another spyware program show an additional 27 problems? Yes, I
have the current version and updates for adaware (SE).

And the name of this magic mystical tool is?

Whoever told you that was "blowing smoke".

The freeware tools are very good, but then so are the spyware authors.
It is a constant battle for the removal tool programmers to keep up
with the latest evolutions of spyware and there are always some
misses, even with the best commercial products.

The most effective approach that I have found is a combination of 4
different freeware utilities:
1. CWShredder - somewhat out of date but still very good at cleaning
up the older versions of CoolWebSearch, which are still out there
infesting computers, and which are quite difficult to remove with
other tools.
2. AdAware SE - fast and pretty thorough. Generally anything and
everything found by AdAware is something that should be removed from
your computer.
3. Spybot Search and Destroy - fast and thorough, but a tad more
agressive than AdAware and because it uses a different technique for
locating spyware it will often find items that get by AdAware (and
vice versa).
4. HiJackThis - extremely efficient. Lists everthing that is loading
when your computer starts up so you need to do some careful research
and analysis before deciding which items to remove.

Good luck

Hi Augie,

I just downloaded SpywareBlaster, and am not sure from the help file
whether or not I need to put Spywareblaster in my start-up folder.
Could you give me some guidance? Thanks.
