I'm going to wipe my drive (by inserting my OEM discs) after 4 years (gulp!)
Can anyone advise how I can back up my Outlook express files and web
favourites? any other tips before I take this brave (or foolish) step?

thanks in anticipation
Ian

backup everything in my documents folder it has your favs and run outlook
express and export all your mail and address book to a pst file those are the
main spots for backup also anwhere you might have put data manually.

and web
favourites?

Open your web browser. File/Export and export your favorites to a floppy.

Back up whatever other data you want to keep to a CD/Flash
memory/external hard drive.

Just curious, why do you want to do this? Perhaps it isn't necessary.

In Outlook Express---File, export... Internet Explorer,
ditto, save the files on floppies or CDs, you may need to do
an intermediate step saving to a folder on the hard drive
first.

Are you planning to sell or give the hard drive (computer)
away and replace it or is this just a re-build for yourself?
If you are giving it away, get a bootable floppy and run a
file eraser program from a cold boot on the A: drive. You
can over-write all the data before you run the OEM restore
disks to be sure that nothing is recoverable.

Thanks for all the tips guys. One issue I do have is that my Mozilla
doesn't have the option to export my favourites, just import, whereas
Explorer has both. As regard to the hard drive, I have now decided that I
will upgrade my 40gb to something more substantial as I'm going through this
process. Am I correct in thinking that if I do this, my OEM discs will load
into the new drive ok or is there some issue around licensing here I need to
be aware of?

thanks again

Find the file bookmark.htm in the Mozilla folder and use Windows Exporer
to move it to a floppy or other external storage device. When you're set
up again, use Mozilla's import feature.

No. You have a green light. If it were the motherboard, a whole
different story.

Your OEM disks will load into the new drive just fine, you
can set the jumpers on the old drive to slave and the new
drive as master. The new drive will become C:. You can
then just copy the files you want (copy, move or import)
from the old drive which will probably become D:.
