I have a P3 computer with lots of applications. I haven'T used it for a
long while. I have nothing that needs saving so I could re format the
HD and then load the WIN XP.

My preference is to re format and load the XP. Any Web sites with
instructions or guidance.

Thanks is advance

Just boot the machines with your WinXP CD, then allow
the disk to be formatted. All the guidance you need is built
into the installation process.

You've got a pretty old computer (in computer years). Make sure it can
meet XP's hardware requirements.

You don't need to fdisk / reformat your hard drive to
upgrade from 98 to XP.

I have done this 100 times.

HOWEVER, if you don't NEED stuff off the computer, and if
you have all your install disks for ALL your apps.....

MY personal preference is to ALWAYS

fdisk
format

reinstall EVERYTHING. You simply cannot go wrong. It
virtually "self-installs."

For ME..... There's just something about a squeaky clean
FRESH as new snow freshly installed OS and apps that just
makes me sleep so soundly at night.

You will never know if you don't start fresh (and I do so at
LEAST quarterly), what problems you may have "lurking".

And as good as it was for its day, "98 is no XP."

And---- I DO hope when you say you're going to load XP,
that you mean XP Pro.

There's just a night and day difference between "The
Granddaddy of all OSs" (XP Pro), and the rest. And that
includes XP Home (what we old timers might call "XP Lite")

For the $50 difference in price (or less), I'd go with the
Big Guy.

That's me,

but then,

you asked.

Back to your original Question.

BY ALL MEANS, fdisk, reformat, and reinstall!

And that-- and a buck 50, will get you half-a-cup of coffee.

Seriously, I've been playing with -- and using for serious
business productivity -- PCs for over 25 years now.

I am VERY anal about my computer.

Format!!!

Because you are doing something *wrong*.

Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if necessary to
accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean installation (delete the
existing partition by pressing "D" when prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:

or here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm

Very poor advice. Unlike with previous versions of Windows, an upgrade to XP
replaces almost everything, and usually works very well.

My recommendation is to at least try the upgrade, since it's much easier
than a clean installation. You can always change your mind and reinstall
cleanly if problems develop.

However, don't assume that doing an upgrade relieves you of the need to
backup your data, etc. before beginning. Before starting to upgrade, it's
always prudent to recognize that things like a sudden power loss can occur
in the middle of it and cause the loss of everything. For that reason you
should make sure you have backups and anything else you need to reinstall if
the worst happens.
