Need advice. Is it a good/bad idea to run Windows Defender and Microsoft
Antispyware "BOTH" at the same time? Will it hurt anything? Does it help
anything? Is one enough, and if so which one would most likely help protect
the system? Confused. 8-(

Unless you're a BETA tester, don't put BETA software on your machine and
both of those lame programs are in BETA.

The Microsoft AntiSpyware (beta) is now obsolete and
has been replaced by Windows Defender. You need to
uninstall Microsoft AntiSpyware (beta) and install the
new Windows Defender program, which is free.

Note: The latest Windows Defender spyware definitions are
available for installation from the Microsoft Update web site.

While I haven't seen anything about this. I'd suspect that they would have
potential conficts for the same resources or files on the system.

Although folks will recommend that you don't run 2 antivirus programs at the
same time - I haven't seen this recommendation for antispyware programs
(although one or two folks have said that it's OK on other forums).

I, personally, suspect that (especially since these programs are closely
related to each other) the chance of potential conflicts would be high. They
may compete for the same system resources - and can compete to scan the same
file at the same time. Generally this would be because both are resident in
memory at the same time. Should you only keep one resident in memory, the
other one won't conflict.

They are the same program.. either you can manually remove MSAS Beta 1
or Defender will do it for you when you install it.

Um.. I think you mean Firewalls.. not anti-virus programs.

Running more than 1 firewall will cause conflict problems. You can have
as many AS and AV programs as you want on your computer. Although you
might run into a situation where one program think part of one of the
other programs has spyware or a virus in it.

See above.

NO, there are potential problems running TWO anti-virus program. You need to
only have one active memory-resident anti-virus "shielding" utility and since
most anti-virus are completive, every anti-virus will always try to install
its own shielding utilty (and some will also remove the other A/V program(s).)
