Advanced texts?

AmendConstitution_ArnoldForPresident

What's popular as the next step after j-w's (et al) books? I'm
thinking C calls, WIN API, SQL interface, ODBC, interfaces with other
applications - notably the web - etc.? Ideally (which I suppose is the
grail in authoring) these would start from mere familiarity with those
areas, yet then penetrate them much heavier than Dummies books, rich
with hands on examples.

The only one I've considered is the John/Stephen/Rob Programmers
Reference - and if you weren't already going to include at least that
in your answer, I'm really mixed up!
