I am using Advanced File Sharing across 2 XP Pro and 2
W98SE machines with shared folders stored on XP1. If I
want users to have access as follows:

XP1/User1 Full Access
XP1/User2 Full Access
XP2/User2 Full Access
XP2/User3 Full Access
W98SE1/User4 Partial Access
W98SE2/User3 Full Access

Given User 2 and User 3 can logon from either XP2 or
W98SE2 (as above), how do I set up User Accounts to
enable the above permission?

Do I need to register all user on the XP1 since it have
all the shared folders? How do I link in the various
locations since it seem a user is identified by
location/username? If they have to be created on each
machine, how do they keep the passwords in synch? And how
do I keep the welcome screen simple (ie no redundant
users listed unecessarily)?

Appreciate some help here - doco is really light on.

Thanks
Mark

That's the thing. They *don't* keep the passwords in synch. You will need
to manually do that (probably by preventing the users from changing it.)

If you want centralized account administration, you need to implement a
domain using Active Directory with a Server version of Windows. $$$$$$$

Now you can see why a "workgroup" design like yours does not scale well for
larger networks.

Thanks Colin. I take it that means that Advanced File
Sharing is really ONLY of benefit within a single multi-
user machine and not for flexible user-based permissions
of networked users (even in a small home-office
environment).

Simple File Sharing looks like the only option for home-
office networking and file sharing.

Bummer! :-(

Cheers
