Hi
I have previously been able to connect through my router to the internet and
to the other computer on my network, at one point having one pc running
Apatche to host a site both used as a homepage. I tried to re-instate this
and found both pcs unable to talk to each other but fine to view websites. I
have tried to re netowrk them, reboot the router. I am stopping short of
re-installing windows as I have some files I have no back ups of and no way
of reliabley backing them up.
Has anyone else had issues like this and if so how can I overcome them.
And yes I have checked both firewalls allow the lan to see it and browse etc.
Thanks

What firewalls are on both computers? Have you installed ANY new security on
either?

We could look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", from each computer, and
diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

To save on message size I will send the other computers data in another post
neither comp has had security changes recently

OK, from METALMICKY we see
Master browser name is: METALMICKY
There are 1 servers in domain HOME

and from UPSTRS01 we see
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master browser name is held by: UPSTRS01

So you have a segmented browse domain. Fix that first.
1) Make sure that the NetBT setting is consistent on all computers.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html
2) Pick one computer to be the master browser.
3) Stop, and Disable, the browser service on the others.
4) Power all computers down.
5) Power the master browser up.
6) When you are looking at the desktop on the master browser, power the others
up.

Then rerun browstat, and check the output.

I could not find a service running that fit the descripition of nt browser so
I passed that part, presuming that a power down and then back up would stop
then resume the service. It apparntly has not as I have still got the issues.
Also, is there anything specific I have to do to assign the master browser? I
just assumed(again...) that this would automaticaly be the first active
computer.

OK, let's see what you get from "sc query".

Sorry this is a bit late, but I am in a diff time-zone , but anyway:
this is off the computer called metalmicky:

SERVICE_NAME: browser
TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
STATE : 4 RUNNING
(STOPPABLE,NOT_PAUSABLE,IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0

and this from the computer upstrs01

SERVICE_NAME: browser
TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
STATE : 1 STOPPED
(NOT_STOPPABLE,NOT_PAUSABLE,IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 1077 (0x435)

Hi again

I have solved my problem, turns out that another user has installed peer
guardien, a p2p firewall. This has now been disabled after I found it running
in the sys tray. I can now use my network as before, and host the internal
web site.
thanks again if anything goes wrong with the network, I know i can come
here, but next time I will forward all the details u asked.
