adobe + me = Whoops!

Hi Everyone -
I'm a dork. I was having some of the problems with adobe that have been
mentioned in these forums; the small box with the red x, a small box with
red, blue, and green that appears on three deep windows on most websites, an
error message that read " external window viewer not found" or something, and
just a lot of general frustration caused by my inability to navigate through
XP spikes in the system, freeze jambs, lockdowns, and the like.
so, after 'reading' a few posts and replies from you great folks- I really
just scanned the p & r's actually, I decided to uninstall Adobe acrobat 4.0,
readers 5.something, 6.1, 6.2, and 7.0. My thought was, and again, after
'reading' the info here, that I'd just do a year end garbage dump (out with
the old...) and then go somewhere into cyberspace and download a free version
of reader 7.0, thereby solving all my problems and realigning the stars and
planets in the process. I discovered the 'whoops' about the second time I was
unable to install 7.0. I currently sit at the keys Adobeless and feeling a
little queezy. Any thoughts guys? (keep in mind, there are rules about the
things you can print on sites like this!)
Regards,
Mike

Why do you have so many versions of Adobe Acrobat on your system? Did you
use the uninstaller supplied by Adobe or Windows Add/Remove Programs or did
you just delete the various Adobe folders on your hard drive? If the
previous versions were uninstalled properly, you should be able to go to the
Adobe website and download the latest version and install it with no
problems.

I used the windows add / remove programs. it looks like i did a good job
getting rid of everything - i looked in the hard drive and, though Adobe was
listed as a file, it was empty. Multiple versions...I think the 4.0 version
came with the computer, no idea where v.5 came from, and v.6 and beyond where
upgrades. I have a Scan Soft 3.0 PDF converter on my computer, should i just
try to use it as a default?

Hi Bert -
thanks for the link. I did set my Soft Scan 3.0 PDF Converter software as a
default for now, and i do like it better than Adobe. It has afew glitches;
your print options do not include current page only or a specified page
range. I do like the coverter features - although it takes awhile to "warm
up. I think it is conflicting with another program at start up; maybe
remnants of adobe(?) I saved the link to foxit and i will use it if needed in
the future. thanks again! Happy 2006!
Mike

Hi,

Glad you like it. And yes, there are still some glitches, but no more
than Adobe Reader. <g>

Also, released is a new beta version of Foxit Reader Pro, which includes
a lot of new annotation features. Eventually we will merge Foxit Reader
Pro with Foxit Reader standard version, so, we recommend everyone to try
the new Pro version (including everything in Foxit Reader, and more.

Thank you Bert,
your information is very helpful. I appreciate it very much. Have a great
night and year.

Hi,
I have a similar problem, I uninstalled Adobe (with uninstall) but with
"search file and folder" I found about 10 or even 12 Adobe files and folders.
Some of them are empty but still there and I can`t delete them becouse of
source or something.

P.S. I hope this will read someone

Hi Su,

You may be able to remove the leftover Adobe files in Safe Mode.

Or you can to Adobe Support and select Adobe reader and do a search such
as "Removing Acrobat Reader 6" if version 6 is the version in question
and look for a solution.
