When downloading a .pdf file from my online banking, I
tried to open in Excel since Acrobat Reader was not
installed yet. There was a box that said "Always use
this program to open this type of file," which was
checked. I didn't catch it in time -to uncheck that box-
and now since I've downloaded acrobat reader I can't get
the bank statements to download into AR because it still
wants to open in Excel. How can I uncheck the box or
change this option, so that it will always use AR to open
these .pdf files?

After downloading the file, right-click on it and select:
Open with > Choose program... > Adobe Reader, then check
the box next to "Always use the selected program to open this
kind of file", then click Apply.

Marlene, in most cases, you can fix this with a few simple steps.

Locate a .pdf file in Explorer
Right click on it, go down the context menu to Open With
Under Open With, select Choose Program ...

That should get you back to the screen you mentioned, that will permit you
to "Always use this program".

Hope this helps. If you don't get the Open With menu, write back, there is
another method of accomplishing this, only slightly more complicated.

Go to the Folder Options applet in Control Panel and click on the File
Types tab. Find the entry for .pdf and edit it to make Acrobat Reader
the default application.

The same way you selected Excel the first time. Right click a .pdf file and
select Open With, select AR and check the box "Always use this program....."
and click OK.
