"Administrators Only" problem with Windows Update

I'm running XP Professional, SP1 on a Dell system (2.4Ghz,
512MB RAM). When trying to use Windows Update, I get a
screen that says "Administrators Only" even though I am
part of the Administrator group or even if I log in as the
Administrator. (This problem has been present since I got
the system a couple years ago).

I've tried the fixes posted on the Microsoft Support
website and the Dell Support website but neither has
helped. I also have done a non-destructive reinstallation
of XP Professional, again with no resolution.

If I go directly to the Microsoft Support website and
attempt to download patches or updates manually, there is
no problem but I'd like to set up for automatic downloads
through Windows Update and not have to hassle with this.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I found the answer, although it wasn't on a Microsoft
website. Rename/delete the folder named "V4" and all
files within it. Reboot your system, click on Windows
Update. It works. How difficult would it be to post that
much information in he Microsoft Support Area? (I spent
about 30 hours trying to chase down that fix). If
Microsoft wants us to keep our systems patched, how about
giving us the ability to do so?
