Going Crazy

This has been an ongoing problem since I have had this
computer. This has happened for about a year and
continues to do so. My wife and I have seperate profiles
so we can customize our desktop and internet favorites.
From time to time when one of us logs onto our profile.
It will take a long time to access the account and then
when it comes up the profile will be deleted. The only
way I know to fix it is delete the profile with the other
persons account and create it again. I don't want to keep
doing this what can I do?

Thanks Eric

Is the machine always shut down gracefully, with the
software Shutdown rather than just hitting the power ?

Yes it is always shutdown properly. There have been times
where it has hung up and not been shut down properly but
this is rare and the profile has never been affected by
this? I have even re-imaged the whole cpu becuase I
thought there may have been a bug in it or something. I
cannot figure this out!
Thanks Eric

I suspect that there is some third-party software installed
that is not respecting logoff/shutdown signalling.
In normal circumstances software is signaled so that it can
release any handles it holds, particularly to the registry, so
that the logoff or shutdown may proceed with the registry
hives being correctly saved and unloaded.
When this is the case, there very often is an event recorded
in the eventlog.

The recreation of the profile is triggered by the existing
profile being seen as unusable, which most often means
either that the premissions on the NTFS storage area are
wrong so that the account cannot read/write there, or that
the account's registry portion is unusable (not saved well).
This account reg is saved in the file NTuser.dat within the
profile (c:\documents and settings\account)

What you could do is
1. occassionally save a copy of the profile (while the account
is not logged into), so that when this does happen you can
restore this onto the newly created profile
2. try to see what applications might be interfering with the
release of the account's registry hive during logoff/shutdown.
(this might involve inventorying what is running, and then
minimizing this, running for a while and seeing if problem no
longer surfaces, etc.).

I can sort of follow what you are saying but I need some
step by step instructions on how to save my profile. I
can check to see if something is interrupting the shutdown
when my buddy comes by. In the meantime can you help me
with saving the profile?

Thank you Eric
