In XP I can open Word, but when I Click "open" in the file
menu and change the drive to my CD, It reports back
"invalid operation" or words to that effect. If I try to
"x" delete that message I get another that says I am not
authorized for that drive, and to contact my system
administrator. I am the administrator! This is a free
standing personal us computer. I am the only one using it.
What do I do to correct this problem? I have not
experienced this before. I have only been using XP a few
weeks, and at this point I'm sorry I changed. It does not
seem like an improved system. It seem they have gone
backward in this case, making it a more difficult system to
us than before.
I will appreciate any help anyone can provide. I have a lot
of data on that CD

Hi Bud,

You should never work directly from the CD.

In fact, working from a removable media is almost a sure way to get
corruption.

Transfer the files from your CD to the hard drive, and work from there.

When you open a Word document, Word creates a temporary "user" file in the
document folder. It can't create this file (or any of the other temp files
it may subsequently need) on the CD, so you can't work directly from the CD.
Copy to your HD first and open from there. Similarly, don't try to save
directly to the CD.
