Administrator or not?

I have had problems with WinXP Home Edition for the two
years since I've had it with installing new software,
etc. I often get a message like "access is denied" even
though I think I'm the administrator. When I do finally
successfully install software it does not show up in the
Programs menu on the Start button -- I have to install an
icon on the desktop to run it.

If I go to "User Accounts" ny name is listed as a
computer administrator. When I run regedit (something I
learned from this newsgroup) and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Current
Version\Software, right-click, and click Permissions my
name is not listed as an administrator.

I'm in over my head here. Please help!

Generally, User names are not listed in Registry permissions, unless you
specifically add it to the Permissions list. The defaults are only for
Group level permissions.

And there are some parts of the Registry and file system, on an NTFS
formatted system, that by default, even Administrators don't have read/write
access to.

I am also having problems accessing certain user folders
and files on one of my drives. I added a new primary
drive with a fresh installation of XP Professional. I
cannot access my old user folder on the old system drive.
Could it have something to do with different
administrator accounts or different workgroup names.
