Not really enough information. I have no idea if your removable storage is
USB or in a drive cage in your computer or firewire or Bluetooth. I have no
idea if it connects and actually gives you a drive letter or if it connects
with no drive letter or if it doesn't connect at all. I have no idea what
message (if any) you are getting when you try to access the removable
storage. I also have no idea why you thought system restore would help in
this case (unless it was just a case of 'it worked yesterday'...)

If you are getting a drive letter and you can see that drive letter but are
getting an 'access denied' error...

How to Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP

Read *carefully* - do not just skim the page and start following steps.
There is important information there dependent on the version of Windows XP

Sorry I didn't supply enough information - comments below inline.
Thanks a million for your help!

Networked to 3 other computers in my home office
Not really enough information. I have no idea if your removable storage is
USB or in a drive cage in your computer or firewire or Bluetooth.

My system shows a forbidden symbol on each of the following:

3 1/2 floppy (A:)
Removable Disk (C:)
Removable Disk (D:)
DVD-RAM Drive (E:)
Removable Disk (G:)
Removable Disk (H:)

My 3 1/2 floppy contains several USB memory card reader slots

XP pro install defaulted to F: for my Local Disk....

If I plug in my USB memory card reader, an additional drive letter
appears, but Message is "J:\ is not accessible. Access is denied."

I have no
idea if it connects and actually gives you a drive letter or if it connects
with no drive letter or if it doesn't connect at all.

I do see all the drive letters with the "interdit" symbol

I have no idea what
message (if any) you are getting when you try to access the removable
storage.

Message is - in a popup Warning box - "Administrator has restricted
this computer to access USB/1394 mass storage devices"

I also have no idea why you thought system restore would help in
this case (unless it was just a case of 'it worked yesterday'...)

I had installed some 3rd party DVD burning software yesterday (which
worked fine), and accepted a "bundle" of 3 windows security updates.

Simple file sharing is already disabled - and when I follow the KB
reference " ... to take ownership of a folder ...... under properties,
there is no Security tab

Read the last paragraph.
If you do not see the security tab - you missed something in the article.

Thanks Shenan

I hate to seem dense, but....

The reference KB article seems to apply to Folders - it's a drive (CD
or other removable) that I want to get control of...

Do you think it's a sharing issue that's prohibiting access?

Killed the awserv applet process that someting put in there, and I can

Search on the internet revealed that this program is part of a package that
belongs to AdminWorks from OSA Technologies, Inc.

Thanks for your help in this. I had the same problem. Here is some additional
information I discovered on the problem.

Many other folks who have experienced this situation have Acer computers
with pre-installed software called Acer Lanscope Agent. ALA is a repackaging
of software by Avocent called AdminWorks Agent. Mine was version X6.
Adminworks is a network remote management tool for controling clients from an
administrator's console. See
http://www.avocent.com/web/en.nsf/AttachmentsByTitle/590551501B.pdf/$FILE/590551501B.pdf.

The Agent is meant to respond to commands from the console. So, if your
machine has ALA or AdminWorks Agent installed but is not part of a network
using the AdminWorks Console part of the package, the Agent piece is useless
and, in our cases, has caused some mischief. See page 4 of the above PDF from
Avocent.

It should be safe to just uninstall this software using "Add or Remove
Programs". Be sure to reboot for removal to take effect. Or, if you are not
comfortable with that, it can be disabled in the Services folder of Computer
Management. It is listed there as "AdminWorks Agent X6". I found that
disabling this service without uninstalling worked just fine.

Thanks for leading me to the right solution.
