I have XP home edition, I have changed my mother board
and now want to use the Windows repair facilty to update
the o.s. on my hard drive.

The problem is that I am asked for the administrator
password to do this.

Under the original installation that was set up there was
a user with administator rights, but when I use that
password it is not recognised. In this situation does XP
assign a default password for the administrator, if so
how do I find out what it is.

The other option I have tried is to enter the user name
with administrator rights followed by that password, this
is also unsuccesful, but maybe I am not using the correct
format between user name and password.

Can anyone out there help me, I am sure this is a real
easy question that you must be bored of reading but for
me it is a big problem.

Graham;
You do not need a password for a Repair Installation.
You are Pressing the wrong "R"

Repair Installation:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_install.htm
Windows Updates will need to be reinstalled.
Install Service Pack first and by itself.
Then install ALL Critical Updates no more than 4 at a time,

Disconnect the network/modem cable before starting repair and do NOT
reconnect the cable until repair is completed and firewall is
installed/enabled.
