Hi

Frustration is now fully set in. I have WinXP Pro on my
computer and lately a strange thing is starting to
happen. If I try to run MSCONFIG or install an
application the programs start up, refresh and then
shutdown. This also happens for regedit or regedt32.

A virus scan has been run to no avail and yes it is upto
date. No messages are in the event logs and I have
reinstalled the OS and applied all updates. No software
or drivers had been installed in the recent weeks.

Installshield installer applications report that "a
previous install was not completed and you need to
reboot". I did this and get the same result each time I
try to run it.

Hope one of you guru's out there can help me as the
technet db didn't.

Hi Howie,

This issue has been traced to an improperly formatted BOOT.INI file. This
is a hidden file, usually in the root directory of the C: drive.

If this is not the case:

Go to Start/Run/CMD. Insert your XP CD into the drive and enter the
following command:

EXPAND -R X:\I386\MSCONFIG.EX_ Z:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\BINARIES

This will extract a new copy of the MSCONFIG.EXE from the CD.
