Adjusting a monitor

I think there must have been a power outage last night. Today my
monitor is out of whack. I have adjusted it before but this time I
can't pull it off. The sides of the monitor are "s" shaped. It is
not dramatic but each control I use will seem to fix one side but
pulls the other side out.

Are there grids or some kind of aid to be able to help adjust the
screen?

Try this...turn off the monitor and then turn it back on. If
it is a CRT monitor, it might automatically degauss itself. But
if the distortion remains, then try a manual degauss. Should the
problem persist, then continue fine-tuning the monitor via the
pin-cushioning or barrel controls. Also make sure that the refresh
rate is set at the proper rate for the monitor, via the display
applet in Control Panel and that the video card is still seeing
the monitor that has been identified via the monitor.inf file.

Brown-outs are a huge threat to PCs. I would suggest you go to a
Office Supply store and buy a simple UPS battery backup unit. You
can get one that will protect the PC/Monitor for under ~$30.00.
While most folks understand Surge Protection - few are aware of
how momentary power-loss can damage a computer.

Windows XP tends to utilize a "Plug-&-Play" definition file for most
monitors (Driver). It would help to redefine the driver to a specific
vendor/model #. The driver/definition will more precisely describe
the monitor and it's capabilities (Resolution/Refresh Rate (if CRT)).
Check the monitor vendor's website for driver files. When updating
you may have to "Force Feed" XP, by un-checking the "Show
Compatible Hardware" check-box and direct the driver update to
use your specific driver. Also many LCD monitors come with a tool
to adjust/fine-tune it to your Video card.

This problem sounds hardware specific. What make/model of monitor?

if adjustment of the controls on the front bezel don't fix the problem
you need to take it to a repair shop, although given the cost of CRT
monitors these days, most are not worth the cost - sorry to say.
