When I use address book from Outlook express and make an
amendment a file comes on my desktop labelled ~ with no
extension. Furthermore since putting on my last message
on another newsgroup I am now being bombarded by BOGUS
microsoft look alike adverts with fixes that carry
viruses. Can anyone tell me what the file ~ is and how I
get rid

That file is product of a bug in Outlook Express due to some update
and contains addresses, try renaming it like your_name.wab and open it
if you want. You can delete it safely.

As for the messages, you need to munge your email address when you
post to Usenet (freddon'(e-mail address removed)) because the addresses are
harvested by spammers.
