What is the difference between the Outlook address book and outlook
contacts? Can I use my contacts for a mail merge in Word? To date I only
seem to be able to use the address book.

The Outlook Address Book is a service in Outlook that allows one to mark/use
Outlook contact folders as address books. (right click on a contacts folder
and select properties. go to the Outlook Address Book tab to disable/enable
a folder and give the book a name.)

Thanks. I tried this. For some reason the same addresses do not appear in
the address book as they do in the contacts folder.

Not sure what you mean by the same addresses. Do you mean that the smtp
addresses are different or that some just don't show up? (Remember that the
oulook address book service needs to see a valid e-mail address or fax
number in order to display it in the address book window.)

Clarify which address book you mean. The Outlook Address Book will show only
electronic addresses. If you are invoking the Address Book from Word, it
will show all your Outlook Contacts.
No address book can display anything other than what resides in an Outlook
Contacts Folder. You may need to make sure you are displaying the correct
Contacts Folder in your address book.
