I just set up a new computer. I copied my old Outlook Data file from the old
computer and then drag and dropped in onto the new data folder. Outlook
initially had an error, but after closing and opening, all is working fine
except...

Contacts are there, but when I click on the To:... button to address an
email, it gives me an error that this address book cannot be opened. What
have I done? How can I fix it?

How was outlook configured previously? Internet email or exchange server
method. and what is the present installation method. Follow the previous
installation method.

If it is Internet email previously reconfigure outlook to internet email,
viceversa.

Error message changes depending on what I do. Basically, it says unable to
open contacts or address book

New Info...

I have made sure the Outlook Address Book service is added to the profile
and that the Contacts folder is marked as an Outlook Address Book. I have
also deleted the Outlook Address Book profile closed Outlook, and restarted.
Still will not display the contacts when I go to address book.

What about running the fixmapi.exe?

Yes, I have done that - repeatedly :-)

The address list could not be displayed. The contacts folder associated with
this address list could not be opened; it may have been moved or deleted, or
you do not have permissions. For information on how to remove this folder
from Outlook Address Book, see Microsoft Outlook help.

You overwrote your PST file. That corrupts your profile beyond repair.
Create a new profile from scratch, then follow what the others have
suggested to get your Outlook Address Book working.

So if I understand correctly, fixmapi.exe or Detect and Repair will do me no
good? I still have the backup of the .pst file. If you have the time, would
you mind giving me a step by step procedure to follow at this point?

What was the correct procedure that I failed to do when trying to move my
Outlook to a new computer?

Fixmapi and Detect and Repair will not help. Creating a new profile is easy.
You should not need your old PST file (but keep track of it just the same).
Your current PST should be fine. It's your Profile that's corrupt, not your
PST.

For the next time, here is the correct way to migrate Outlook data (applies
to both Outlook 2002 and 2003):

I have tried this and it doesn't seem to have the desired effect for me,
basically i have the same problem as described and have followed all the
advice given so far. However I get stuck when i have to choose to set up a
new address book as an error message comes up saying "The account you have
added is not fully configured, it might not work until re-configured
correctly" I then only have the option to cancel?

also if i go to properties on the contacts i cannot set it as a place to
look for addresses as the option is greyed out.

You either do not have a valid mail transport or you have a corrupt profile.
Create a new one.
