Having problems with IE6 on Windows 2000.

If I type a standard URL in the address bar in the following format:
www.yahoo.com

It tells me the page cannot be displayed and the address bar shows:
C:\Documents and Settings\Steven\Desktop\www.yahoo.com

Same if I typed a URL without the 'www' - i.e. if I type yahoo.com
(which should normally find the page), I get:
C:\Documents and Settings\Steven\Desktop\yahoo.com

But there's no problem if I type in http://www.yahoo.com
And also no problem if I type in http://yahoo.com

And not surprisingly control/enter doesn't work for me either (this
normally allows you to write any word in the address bar and it'll
automatically place http://www. before it and .com after it.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks

Steven

Some program (usually spyware\parasite) may have overridden the URL prefix
setting?
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Look for: Repair the corrupted or altered (spyware) HTTP prefixes
See section: Various Registry Fixes = "RepairDefaultPrefix.reg" download and
run.

If still having same DSO error then there is some hidden malware. You need
to get special attention. Explain your problem and paste a copy of the .log
file.

Go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip
Download "Hijack This!" [freeware] Latest version is 1.98.

Unzip the Download file in a NEW FOLDER that you can create before you start
the download.
DO NOT install in your Desktop folder.
DO NOT use any of the TEMP folders that are presently in your computer.
Double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates "hijackthis.log")

Next, HijackThis | Config [button] | Misc Tools [button]
Click: Generate StartupList log [button] (generates "startuplist.txt")

Next, go to the below location:

Hi
I posted yesterday with the same problem. I have tried all the spyware,
ad-aware and all the tools availiable but can't fix the issue. I run search
and destroy and I get this DSO message which after I look at the contents
says something about prefixes etc, and that's why I need to always apply
http:// or else it won't work. The search and destroy tells me all the time
that the problem has been fixed but if I run it again, its there again.
Hopefully their is a soloution.

thanks for the quick response I will try it tonight and tell you what happens.
