Address Bar Problems in IE6

I am running Inernet Explorer 6 SP1 on Windows 2000.
If I type an address into the address box and hit enter, the browser
will lock up for 2 or 3 minutes, then go to the site. If this same
address is on a Favorite Link, or a link on any web page, it
works just fine.

From another posting, I went to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced
Browsing, and UNCHECKED "Enable 3rd party Browsing Extensions"
This fixed the problem, but I don't know what to test or how to fix
the problem caused by a 3rd party? What will NOT work if I leave this
disabled?

I have ran both spybot, and adaware.

Hi,

If it worked after you disabled third party programs (Browser Helper
Objects (BHO)) it may be that you still have spyware, or you may have a corrupt
BHO.

To eliminate the spyware angle, try CWShredder. It will usually catch the
things missed by AdAware and Spybot. You can download it here:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip

In regards to BHO's, they are usually browser plug-ins. For example, the
google toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) is a BHO. For the most part, they
shouldn't cause any problems, but there are also spyware varieties that can
lead to a lot of popups and other grief.

To selectively remove BHO's, you can download a utility such as BHOCop,
available from:

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,270,00.asp

Simply install it, and then remove undesired components.

Regards,

Altrus

Thanks for the info. I ran the BHO cop and found an unknown BHO
progam in winnt\system32\checkUrl.dll. I disabled it, and IE now
works OK

My pleasure :-)
