There are some very basic French words missing from the dictionary: e.g.
"reflection" (it was suggested that I replace it with "reflexion", which my
top-level French dictionary gives as an "inferior" alternative)

The French Thesaurus is also fairly dodgy, giving many results as "Aakey"
whatever that's supposed to mean...

In order to add a word that's missing and marked as incorrect, right-click the
word and choose "Add" to add it to your custom dictionary.

This sounds like a problem in the thesaurus engine. Which version of Word do
you have? If it's 2003, I suggest you go to the word.spelling.grammar
newsgroup and ask there. Be sure to specify the version of Word, and give a
couple of examples what you see in the thesaurus. There are a couple of
Microsoft people that monitor that group, and they can pass the problem along
to the group in France responsible for the proofing tools.
