Adding Video; I FIGURED IT OUT, BUT WHY???

I spent a whole day trying to figure out why most of the
videos that I downloaded would not play when they were
inserted into a powerpoint presentation. (Office XP
Prof.) All of the info I found on-line, did not seem to
help. The response from an MVP directing me to an
article from 2000 did not help either. Nothing but a
dead end from MS unless I was going to pay. I could not
figure out why 1 or 2 of the videos worked, and all of
the others did not work? When I inserted them they
looked like they inserted fine, but when you run the
presentation or click on the video it just flashes and
disappears. I tried downloading .AVI, .mpg, .wmv, etc.
Anyway it finally dawned on me that the two files that
played were in the "My Videos" folder and all of the
other videos that did not work were downloaded to and
inserted from the folder of the project I am working on.
When I moved the videos to the "My Videos" folder they
worked!!!! But why??? My guess is that it has something
to do with the link to the file location? I don't know
if the file structure with the "My Videos" folder is
something that is specific to the Dell computer that I am
using? Anyway, now that I know what the problem is does
anyone know how to fix it? How can I get PowerPoint to
play a video from whatever folder it is inserted from?
Is there a PP setting, or a XP setting that will fix
this? Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Just as a confirmation, I have not had any problem linking and playing to
videos in the same folder as the ppt file is located. I do a lot of
classroom instruction with ppt, including some videos. I have had no
problems. By habit I always put the videos into the same class folder as the
ppt file. I'm still using Office XP Pro as well.

BGZ,

PowerPoint can be really fussy about what video types (and location) it plays.
