I need to add a couple USB ports on my computer (XP Home)
and the 4 to 1 adapter (creates 4 ports plugging into one)
doesn't work. Any way to get additional USB ports?

Sure, just go to Wal-mart, Sams, Circuit City, Best Buy or about any other
place that sells computer stuff and buy a self-powered (important) USB Hub
that functions at USB 2.0 speed.

Or buy a PCI card with USB 2.0 [and maybe Firewire too ]

Hi, John.

What Gene said, or buy a PCI card with 4 (or 5, with one of them internal)
USB ports for about $40. (That's what I did.)

You should be able to get them for quite a bit less than that though.
Look for the right deal ;)
