Adding Spacing Below to 1/a/i

Word 2002 has a style called 1/a/i. The options for modifying it
seem to be limited in comparison to the options for modifying other
styles. For example, I have not found a way to modify the style to
require 6 pt. spacing below the paragraph.

Even when I apply direct paragraph formatting to an example of the
style and then click in the preview pane to "update to match
selection," the spacing does not carry through to other examples of
the same style.

What's the recommended practice to do what I'm trying to do?

I believe that is a list style. As such, it is applied on top of a paragraph
style. You need to modify the underlying paragraph style. Better still,
apply the Body Text style, which already has 6 pts Space After.

Thanks. The way this seems to work best is to apply a paragraph
style first and then to apply a list style, as opposed to appying the
list style initially to a paragraph without text.

Yes, I noticed that if I apply the list style to Body Text, the Style box
shows Body Text; if I apply it to Normal, it shows the list style. Since it
is not possible to update the Normal style by example in recent versions of
Word, I guess this isn't much of a drawback, but it's confusing. FWIW, it's
better to set up outline numbering linked to a hierarchy of styles as
described in http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html
