I have just purchased an IBM ThinkPad with Window XP
Professional. I love all the fetures, but it does not
have the office software I was looking for, such as
excel, access, word etc. What is the best way to get
these features without having to change from Professional
to Office XP?

You seem to be confusing the operating system, Windows XP, with the
application software, Office. Easy enough to do, since the latest version of
Office is also XP. Office XP comes in different configurations like
Professional, which include different combinations of the various programs
that comprise Office. The bottom line is, the fact that your new PC has the
operating system Windows XP has nothing to do with whether Office is
installed on it or not.

What you probably want to do -- if you have a legitimate, old version of
Office from a previous PC -- is look into upgrade paths (or, if you still
have the discs, you can install your current copy on your new PC). Beware,
Office ain't cheap.

Office is, and always has been, separate from Windows. If you want to use
Office XP, you will have to purchase it.

If you expected Windows XP to come with these, sorry to tell you
that neither Windows XP, nor any other version of Windows, has
ever come with these programs, or any other application software.

If your previous computer running an older version of Windows
came with these programs, it wasn't that it came with Windows, it
was that your vendor chose to bundle Microsoft Office as part of
the package he sold you.

No, you can't change from Windows XP Professional to Office XP.
WIndows XP is an operating system. You can't run your computer
without an operating system.

Office XP is a suite of application programs, including excel,
access, word etc. You install application software into the
operating system. It's not either-or. You need both.

If you want these applications, you need to buy a copy of
Microsoft Office.
Alternatively you can choose to buy another office suite, such as
Corel WordPerfect Office, StarOffice, or you can download the
free OpenOffice.
