Missing Network Icons

I have been working this issue or issues for the last 4 days. In trying to
fix the missing network icons, I have been trying to verify and subsequently
add the Network Sevices for Simple TCP/IP Services via Add / Remove Programs.

When I get to select or check the Simple TCP/IP Services, I receive an error
message stating:

"YOU DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO ADD OR REMOVE NETWORKING COMPONENTS."

I have attempted as the Administrator and my personal account wiht Admin
rights but no avail. I am not sure what to do. I believe this has something
to do with SP2 and RPC but I am so dizzy and frustrated. I am not sure what
to do or where to go.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

Here is my dilema:

Installed XP SP2 3 weeks ago. Beginning last week, I noticed that various
services (primarily RPC) were not starting. In addition, various tasks
started to fail or not run (add or removing programs). After searching MS
site, various internet sources I have been unable to isolate the problem.

Wes,

Thanks for the information. I wsa able to resolve the issue but not
exactlty sure how or what really was the problem. I followed the825826
instuctions and the network icons just appeared.

But the problem is back again today. The network icons are missing and will
check on the RPC service but would gues that it is not starting which
subsequently causes many other services to bomb.

i have been cleaning up my system and was uninstalling proggies that I no
longer use etc. I am running Norton SW 2005. The Unerase Protection service
is unalble to establish a link. I attempted to uninstall NSW but failed
during un-installation .

The only other program that I have running that I am not sure of is Cacheman
XP.

ANy ideas? Thanks.

I did delete Cacheman XP right after I had replied. I also have tried to
uninstall Norton due to the Live Update errors and the Unerase Protection
service failure. Each time NSW does not allow me to uninstall. I have gone
to the Symantech site and can or will pursue instructions for manually
removing NSW.

RPC indicates that it has started but the option to Restart Stop or Pause is
greyed out. Also it is running Auto but cant modify either. RPC should be
set to log on as a Network Authority, correct?

I was thinking that perhaps I should back up all files and then do some type
of re-install or upgrade with my original disk. I don;t want to have to do a
clean install if not necessary primarily because of not time or even space to
re-install eveything.

If I would do an upgrade wouldnt all of the files remain and all of the
system files would be updated and set back to default settings. MAybe this
woudl be an option.

Thanks for your assistance.

My RPC...
Start, Stop, Pause and Resume buttons are grayed out.
Automatic, but grayed out.
Log on as: Local System account, but grayed out.

Open regedit and check this key.
Start | Run | Type: regedit | OK

Navigate to >>>
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Rpcss
Value Name: ObjectName
Value Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: LocalSystem

I checked the registry and was already set with the specifications below. The
"allow service to interact with desktop" was not checked.

But I did notice that the RPC LOCATOR service was set to "Log on as Network
Authority". The RpcSs did have the same "Log on as" properties previously as
I remember checking it yesterday.

Should the "Log on as" properties be the same for each? Also I am wondering
if my DNS settings and HOST file entries could have some impact? I recently
was laid off from my employer which required my work laptop which was running
on the LAN with the Dell Dimension 4300 sitting behind a Netgear router.

As a full-time telecommuter, I would connect remotley to the corporate
network via DSL through ERAS Nortel Client. Both computers had DNS entries
wiht Sprint AD domains which was required for connecting to the Sprint
netwok. Maybe I dont have those settings modified now that I basically have
this Dell and an HP AllinOne Laser printer with each device riding on one of
the 4 ports of the router in my LAN.

Not sure if this provides any help or has no bearing. Thanks for your
assistance.

Still no network icons.

Thanks.,

I stumbled across something in another post and thought it was worth looking
at that registry entry.

You've done this, right?
Start | Run | Type: control netconnections | OK |
Right click your connection | Properties | Check:
Show icon in notification area | OK

I am not on a network. I have the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator
service set to manual. All I could find about the Remote Procedure Call
(RPC) Locator service was...
[[The RPC run-time library uses it to find server programs on server host
systems.]]

My Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator is set to logon as...
NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService.

I have no earthly idea what good this could do, but it can't hurt.

Start | Run | Type: cmd | OK |
When the Command Window pops up, type:

ipconfig /flushdns

Hit ENTER.

The only thing the HOSTS file should affect in this case would be whether or
not you could connect to a certain address or not.

As far as DNS settings, to see some settings...
Open a command prompt and type:
ipconfig /all
Hit ENTER.

Is DNS Client set to Automatic?
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | OK |
Scroll down to and double click: DNS Client |
Under Startup type: Automatic

Start | Run | Type: control netconnections | OK |
Right click your connection | Repair
