I just instal a kingston 512 ddr400 on the second slot and i previously
had a (no particular brand) 256 ddr266 installed.

i clipped it to the slot....and the pc whent fine even tells me that i
have 768mb ram when i look up the system.

do I need to check anything else or change anydriver or...well
anything???

i m on a winxp sp2 celeron 2.4o mhz

thanks

Everything probably went fine, you just have 1 small problem with the pc2100
en pc3200 running on the same Motherboard. Your fsb will run at the slowest
ram setting, which is the 266mhz=pc2100, which is really to bad because you
got 512mb that can run at 400Mhz. It mght even be worth taking out the 256,
putting the 512 in just the 1 slot and run your system like that.

You have installed mixed RAM (DDR400 in a DDR266 pc), ALSO you have the
larger RAM chip in the second slot.
It's not a good idea to mix, however at least you've put fast RAM into a
slow pc, so it will all work at the slow speed (you would have problems had
it been the other way round).

I suggest one change. Switch over the chips, so the 512 chip is in slot 1,
and 256 chip is in slot 2. It's always best to have the larger chip in slot
1.

Shouldn't need to do anything. But there *can* be troubles if such
different modules do not match well enough. If you do get trouble
(sudden reboot especially) suspect this and drop back to just the 512

Thanks guys i really didn't know what to think of mix ram and slot
priority!!!

there was no bug but no real improvment i ll swap it all next time i
reboot

Is there a way to check the efficiency of ram as i wont know if its
better to have only the 512 or both together????

I will try just the 512 in slot on and if i get a reply i may the the
256 again later....If i get a positive answer on the subject

thanks

See if in normal to full load for *you* it is making any actual use of
the page file. With just the 512 in place, go to
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/index.html
and get the XP Page file monitor (at the bottom)

Run it after a full session of use. If it indicates say only 50 MB or
less, the other module will be doing nothing useful. Usage above that
indicates how much more RAM is worth while

well i just did(doug xp.exe) as an administrator in safe mode( i need
to do it as an administrator the first time) and now just plug the
512mb ddr400 in the slot 1.....
when i start the pc it says :
MEMORY FREQUENCY SET AT DDR 226 (before windows load up)

which doesn't please me as there no ddr266 in the pc at the moment!
do i have to do an updated of something? in bios i found a place where
I seem to be able to change a ddr seting but there's only 2 choices
ddr266/AUTO it's on auto!!! shouldn't it say....... memory frequency
set at ddr400????

about the doug xp .exe......that's what i got????

Pagefile Physical Location: C:\pagefile.sys
Current Pagefile Usage: 19 MB
Session Peak Usage: 20 MB
Current Pagefile Size: 384 MB

when i m not using anything just the basic...does it mean anything to
you??

what should i do.........ddr266 or ddr400 or both or which slot???
if i need a bios update explain in detail as i really don't undertand
Bios..

thanks

Your mainboard, CPU, memory should match for best performance.
For instance there are 2 P4 celeron processors. One runs at 400 FSB
and the celeron D runs at 533 FSB. This is just the tip. Not being
able
to see what you have in the way of hardware any answer you get here is
just a guess.
