I HIGHLY suggested (and actually considered vital) that you get a DSL/CABLE router
with built in firewall. This is a separate box that sits between your DSL modem and
PC. I personally have a Linksys BEFSR81, but there are many good brands/models. This
will provide several things for you.
It provide MUCH better HARDWARE based protection from outside internet intrusion
(virus, IP port probes, etc).
It can also be setup to connect and maintain you DSL/CABLE connection.
It can allow multiple PCs to be connected to the broadband connection.
Warning: Now that you are on broadband, with an IP within a broadband ISP's block of
IPs, you will be targeted for probes much much more.
