Adding combination of non consecutive cells

Fairly new to Excel. I have learned how to sum the totals of a number of
consecutive cells in a vertical column. I select the cells, stopping the
selection where I want the total to appear ... then select sum from the tool
bar at the top. How to sum (add) when the cells are not consecutive, without
writing out the formula is the question?

You don't even have to do that. Just use the ctrl key and select each cell
desired. The sum will show on the status bar if you have sum selected there.

Do the same thing (select Sum from the tool bar), only don't press enter when the suggested range
appears in the formula. Instead, click your first cell, then hold down Ctrl and click the rest of
the cells, and then press "Enter"
